HILO — Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i boys soccer opened up its 2024 season with a 5-2 win over Hilo on the road.
William Henderson and Gabriel Arquitola led the way for the winners, posting two goals apiece. Teammate Princeton Kuamoo added another.
On the Vikings’ side, Channing Oda and Joseph Andrade scored one goal each.
Coming off a state championship appearance a year ago, KSH (1-0) will look to get back to that stage for redemption in 2024-25.
The Warriors will spend the rest of the week off before taking the pitch against east-side rival Waiakea — scheduled to play at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Kea‘au.
Hilo will regroup and next play Honoka‘a at 2 p.m. Dec. 4 in Honoka‘a town.
Immediately following the boys match, the Warriors’ and Vikings’ girls teams squared off on the same pitch, with the result ending in a 1-1 draw.
Rhacelyn Respicio scored KSH’s lone goal, while Aneala Sibayan notched Hilo’s. Both teams start the season at 0-0-1.
The Warriors are coming off a state championship berth from 2023-24, in which they fell to PAC-5 in penalty kicks. The Vikings made the state quarterfinals last season, falling to Mililani 2-0.
KSH will next play Waiakea at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Hilo. Hilo will play Kea‘au on Monday at home.
Waiakea 8, MLCA 0
Coming off a state quarterfinal appearance from last season, Waiakea boys soccer began the 2024-25 season on the right foot — routing Makua Lani Christian Academy 8-0 on Monday in Hilo town.
Warriors star Austin Mohica led both teams with a hat trick, while teammate Kolby Okutsu scored two of his own. Ito Doratt, Callen Furtado and Louis Perroy scored once each.
Waiakea (1-0) will next take the pitch Tuesday against KS-Hawai‘i on the road. The Lions (0-1) will host Parker on Tuesday afternoon at Old Kona Airport.
Kona 4, Parker 0
Konawaena boys soccer started off the season on a high note with a 4-0 shutout of Parker on Monday at Julian R. Yates Field.
The paper could not obtain the top scorers of the match by deadline.
The Wildcats (1-0) will next take the pitch against Makua Lani on Dec. 5 in Kealakekua. The Bulls (0-1) will drive south to Kona town to play the Lions on Tuesday.
Basketball: Pahoa 44, HPA 5
Pahoa girls basketball throttled Hawaii Preparatory Academy during its second game of the season Monday night in Pahoa town, winning 44-5.
The Daggers out-scored Ka Makani in every quarter, led by Sophia Moniz with a game-high 20 points. HPA’s leading scorer was Naomi DeMille with three points.
Pahoa (2-0) will return to the court on Tuesday night in Pahoa town, hosting Kea‘au. Ka Makani is still searching for its first win at 0-3, and will next face Christian Liberty Academy on Tuesday night in Waimea.
The Daggers also faced Parker on Thursday night at home, winning 46-15. Moniz was the game’s leading scorer with 17, while Adalyn Ballard led the Bulls with nine.
Kohala 56, Waiakea 30
Kohala girls basketball earned its first BIIF win of the season against Waiakea on Monday in Kapa‘au, routing the Warriors 56-30.
The Cowgirls 34-11 lead at halftime was too much for the visitors to overcome. Kohala’s Adriana Jayne Soriano led the way with 14 points, followed by teammates Kalia Marquez and Loryn-Rose Carvalho with 12 each.
Waiakea was led by Kaya Texiera, who was the only Warrior that reached double-scoring figures with 11. Sadie Calma followed behind her with six.
The Cowgirls, who made a state tournament appearance in 2023-24, are off to an impressive 6-1 overall start. They’ll next host Kealakehe on Dec. 6 inside King Kamehameha Park Gymnasium.
The Warriors are at 1-2 overall, and will next voyage across the Saddle Road to Kona town to face Kealakehe on Tuesday in the Waveriders’ gym.
KSH 71, CLA 22
KS-Hawai‘i girls basketball dominated CLA 33-0 in the opening quarter of Monday’s game in Kea‘au, setting the tone for the remainder of the night — in which the Warriors won 71-22.
KSH had four double-figure scorers — Xela Yagin (12), Kacie Febo-Santiago (11), Shailan Benevides (10) and Maci Lonokapu (10). The Canefire did not have a single player in double digits, but Shiloh Glenn led the way with seven points.
The Warriors are now 2-0 in BIIF play and 4-2 overall. They’ll next take the court against Parker on Monday night in Kea‘au.
CLA (0-1) will face Kea‘au at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Kea‘au High School.
Laupahoehoe 72, CLA 42
Laupahoehoe boys basketball earned win No. 1 of the season after thrashing CLA on Monday in Kea‘au. The Seasiders won 72-43.
The paper could not obtain the top scorers from this game by deadline.
Laupahoehoe (1-1) will travel to Kea‘au to play the Cougars on Dec. 9. The Canefire (0-1) will also next play Kea‘au at 7 p.m. Saturday on the road.
Hilo 75, Parker 27
Hilo boys basketball opened 2024 with a 75-27 beatdown on Friday at Hilo High. The Vikings set the tone for the game early with a 20-0 first quarter, and the Bulls couldn’t recover.
Hilo’s (1-0) Shaystan Iyo led the way with 12 points, followed by teammates Tre Palmerston (11) and Phillipe Birrueta (10). Parker (0-1) was led by Ethan Schmitt with 11 points and BJ Daost with eight.
The Vikings will enjoy a couple of weeks off before returning to action against Ka‘u on Dec. 10 in Pahala. The Bulls will face the Trojans at 6 p.m. Saturday inside Ka‘u District Gymnasium.
